1. Comment and converse during live events through your twitter profile. Other people at this event will be highly engaged with updates and most likely follow you. Don’t forget to hash the event name (#event)
2. Link to your twitter profile through the name/ url fields on blog comment forms. Break up the keyword stuffing to your homepage for a while and watch as new people follow you after reading relevant comments.
3. Use an email like signature when posting on blogs and forums. Some might say SPAM, but a few words can tell people why your opinion counts and drive some traffic over to that tweet stream with a 0.0001% CTR

Common, you know you have thousands of followers that never read your tweets! It’s tweet stream blindness and this epidemic is going to kill the social networking tool.

Once you start following over a few hundred people the updates are so frequent and the SPAM is so rampant that it’s almost impossible to filter out the quality updates. Either way people are still getting traffic and making money with twitter, so while not build your follower list while your engaged in other activities online.
