Did you know the Google algorithm that’s responsible for for indexing and ranking organic/ natural results sometimes checks to see if your site has a privacy policy?
While this isn’t confirmed by the webmaster guidelines, it’s been discussed over the years at search marketing conferences. We do know that the Quality Score in AdWords can be affected by the lack of a legal page, so it only makes sense this would carryover to SEO.
Why you ask?
Well, think of the reasons why a legitimate site wouldn’t have a privacy policy.
There isn’t one! Even the simplest sites use log files to track visitors. And these tracking activities should be disclosed. And most sites capture email, process orders and allow the users to interact with databases. This should all be covered in your privacy policy and terms of use. So a site without this legal page may in fact be illegitimate in Google’s eyes!
Since I’m not a lawyer and really hate wasting time on that stuff, I use this wizard provided for free by the DMA (Direct Marketing Association). Some of the questions are a bit confusing and you’ll have to edit it before adding to your site. [Depending on the options added, some text can be redundant]
